Artist Statement
(in which the artist admits she doesn’t know why)
I did not recognize a pattern. It wasn’t until someone had commented that my art includes water, tones of sepia, and beings facing away from me that I made the connection. We all have an aesthetic we gravitate towards, and I knew from a young age that I really liked doors, but did not know the reason why. I crafted blueprints of the type of doors I wanted in my backyard when I was older, I stopped on walks to admire every door frame, I wrote about them. Even today, I cannot tell you why I like the things that I like. I could make one up. Maybe it is because it serves as a possibility? It gives me something to consider, to imagine, it’s a mystery and who doesn’t love a good puzzle to solve? And water…need I come up with a reason why that shows up time and time again? I think you know why. The tones of blue and sepia blend in automatically. If my work is meant to represent a mysterious possibility or intended to reminisce about something long gone, then I suppose those colors would fit. Honestly, I don’t know why I like the things that I like. I’ve been fortunate to have a vivid memory. Moments and conversations repeat. Nostalgia can be dangerous in the wrong temperament. I return to scenes hoping to recreate a moment or a feeling I didn’t fully appreciate. But it’s never the same. The photographs in this collection span six years, six countries, and six states (I am just now realizing how dire that can seem, but alas, that’s nostalgia for you). Living like a stray cat, making a home wherever I wandered, some of these memories are the most familiar and comforting. They also serve as a reminder that nothing truly lasts. Record your time, don’t dwell on why, and move forward.
